Welcome!

I’m Lars. I’m an engineer.  I live in Cotati California with my beautiful wife,  our two cats, and our five chickens.

My new-found hobby is woodworking. I’m obsessed! It taps into something primal, it takes me back to being a child in Denmark building anything and everything out of LEGO. Time simply flew, and it was always about the process not the destination. Woodworking feels the same way.

I’m mostly interested in furniture making. Milling boards four-square is my least favorite part. I enjoy the process of mastering joinery – particularly with hand tools. Glue-ups stress me out, so maybe that’s an opportunity to learn. I’m developing an appreciation for finishing.

I’ve no interest in making 10 crappy pieces. I can’t compete with a shop in China on volume, and don’t much want to. I’ll make a piece that’s as nice as I can make it, and it’ll take the time it takes, and I’ll move on to the next one. That said, I do tend to sometimes get caught up in “getting things done” – “only 15 mortises and tenons to go!” So this is a good opportunity for me to become more present. It’s not about making 15 mortices and tenons – it’s about making one that I enjoy making and which is as good as I can make it, and then repeating that 15 times.  Woodworking will be a good teacher for me.

This page is primarily for me. It’s extraordinarily basic, and that suits me. It’s a place for me to document my ideas, my work processes, my learnings, and my pieces – not a place to show off that I can write fancy HTML. Secondarily, this page is a way for me to share all of the above with my friends and family. If others get value from the page, then that’s cool – feel free to tell me what you like. If not, my feelings won’t be hurt.
